Mikell DeMille Harp Studio

MiKell DeMille holds a degree in Harp Performance and Pedagogy from Brigham Young University. She is fully certified in the Suzuki Harp Method (Books 1–5) and has maintained an active private studio for over 30 years, teaching students from age 3 through adulthood.

About Mikell’s Studio

Teaching Philosophy

I teach the Suzuki Method, which encourages learning by ear first while developing solid techniques. Note reading is introduced once the foundation is strong. This approach fosters musicality, ear training, and technical skills while cultivating a positive environment where each child can thrive. I believe we are not just developing musicians, but beautiful characters through music.

Studio Vision

I envision each student as an accomplished learner and believe every child can achieve excellence. By maintaining this long-term vision, both the parent and I can guide each decision and task with purpose. My goal is to provide a positive, loving environment that fosters growth, not only musically but personally. I aim to develop admirable hearts, not just concert harpists. The lifelong skills students gain—such as confidence, perseverance, responsibility, sensitivity, self-expression, and commitment—are of the highest importance

Lesson Structure

Lessons are available for students ages 3 through adult and include both private and group instruction. Multiple recitals are held each year, and students have the opportunity to participate in the AHS Festival, Suzuki Harp Utah Chapter Graduation, and Suzuki Harp Institutes.

Achievements

Her students have achieved recognition at the local and national levels, placing in the American Harp Society National Competition and various local competitions. MiKell has taught at Brigham Young University, Suzuki Harp Summer Institutes, and Sagemont Elementary in Weston, Florida. She is an active member of both the Suzuki Harp Utah Chapter and the American Harp Society, Utah Chapter.

Mikell DeMille teaches harp from her home studio in Farmington, Utah, where she welcomes students from Davis, Salt Lake, Morgan, and Weber counties. With over 30 years of experience, Mikell has guided students of all ages and skill levels, both in person and virtually. Her passion for teaching extends beyond state lines—she regularly teaches out-of-state students via Zoom, making world-class harp instruction accessible no matter where you live.

Private Lessons

Private lessons occur weekly and vary in time depending on skill level.

Group Lessons

Part of the tuition includes group lessons. Group lessons are a great way to practice theory, socialize, and grow as a harpist.

Suzuki Harp Institute

Suzuki Harp Institute happens every 2 years typically at a University, and is a fun option for students to be around hundreds of young harpists as well as take lessons from the best instructors in the country and learn music theory.

Performances

Halloween recitals, service performances, Christmas recitals, and unique performance opportunities for all students.

AHS Festivals

Students get the opportunity to participate at AHS Festivals where they can get feedback from judges. This typically occurs at Brigham Young University.

Book Graduation Performances

Once a harpist completes a Suzuki book, they have a recital to celebrate all their hard work. It’s a fun opportunity for family to see their loved one perform.

Mikell was the most fabulous harp teacher. She taught me for 10 years, and it’s something I’ll treasure forever. From all the fun memories, the hard work, and the ability to share harp music with the world. Forever indebted and grateful to Mikell.

FAQs

How much do harps cost?

Harp prices vary depending on the size of the instrument and the skill level of the player. Young or beginning students typically start with a lever harp, which is more affordable and appropriately sized for smaller harpists. As students progress—typically by the time they reach a certain Suzuki book and height—they may graduate to a pedal harp.

Pedal harps come in a range of sizes and prices, with full-size models often costing significantly more. Mikell recommends Lyon & Healy harps, which are known for their quality and craftsmanship. These can be purchased new at the Lyon & Healy showroom in Salt Lake City or found used through a variety of trusted sources.

For students just getting started, harp rentals are a great option and can make learning more accessible and low-risk while deciding if harp is the right long-term fit.

How old should my child be to start harp lessons?

Most children are ready to begin harp lessons around ages 3 to 5, depending on their attention span, motor skills, and interest in music. Mikell works closely with families to determine the best time to start. Younger students often begin on smaller lever harps and benefit from playful, encouraging instruction tailored to their age and ability.

Do I need a harp to begin lessons?

While owning a harp is ideal, you don’t need to buy one right away. Many students begin by renting a lever harp, which makes it easier to start learning without a major investment. Mikell is happy to recommend trusted rental sources and guide you through finding the right size and style of harp for your needs.

What areas do you offer harp lessons in?

Mikell DeMille teaches from her home studio in Farmington, Utah, and offers in-person lessons to students across Davis, Salt Lake, Weber, Morgan, and northern Utah County. She regularly teaches students from cities such as Layton, Kaysville, Bountiful, Centerville, Ogden, Mountain Green, Park City, Salt Lake City, Sandy, Draper, Lehi, and Highland.

For students outside of driving distance—or even out of state—Mikell also offers online harp lessons via Zoom, making it easy to receive expert instruction from anywhere.
